The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Antedios joined the Boadicea the Victorious lineup in 2015. It is a scent conceived as a moment of presence, an exercise in controlled contrast that rewards attention. A sharp, almost bitter opening of blackcurrant and grapefruit gives way to a heart stacked with ylang-ylang, neroli, rose and jasmine, then pulled sideways by cinnamon and clove. The transition from the cool citrus bite to the warm spice is one of the more compelling arcs in the composition, a pivot that happens within the first hour and sets the tone for everything that follows. The base refuses to settle. Vanilla and amber soften, sandalwood grounds, and oud arrives in measured doses, present but not declarative.
The unusual player here is vermouth in the base. Its botanical sharpness prevents the amber-vanilla-oud trio from reading as one more variation on a familiar gourmand structure. The herbaceous lift of vermouth, combined with lemongrass and grapefruit in the top, gives Antedios a tension between the botanical and the gourmand that the heart's white florals only briefly resolve.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes belong to blackcurrant. That dark, almost cassis-like tartness lands immediately, cut by grapefruit's brighter acidity and lemongrass's green edge. There's a fleeting bitterness that reads almost medicinal, like the first sip of something stronger than expected. The florals haven't shown up yet. Neither has the spice. It is, for a brief window, a confident, slightly confrontational fruit opening. Around the 30-minute mark, the composition pivots. Ylang-ylang and neroli push forward, their creamy-white sweetness filling the space the citrus carved out. Rose arrives quietly, never solo, always woven into the jasmine and ylang. Then the spices make their move. Cinnamon and clove don't crash in; they accumulate, layering warmth into the floral heart until the whole middle phase feels like a room that's been lit by candles for too long. The drydown settles into amber, vanilla and sandalwood, with oud threading through like a dark hem. Vermouth's herbal coolness lingers beneath everything, which keeps the base from going fully sweet.
Cultural impact
Antedios draws collectors who want the house's signature richness but prefer something brighter, more spice-led, and less overtly sweet than its heavier offerings. The combination of grapefruit and blackcurrant in the opening gives it an immediate lift that distinguishes it from the brand's denser compositions, and the interplay between cinnamon, clove, and the floral heart keeps the scent animated throughout its wear. It's a composition that rewards attention, revealing new facets as the hours pass, and one that tends to appeal to wearers who appreciate structure and contrast in equal part.
