The Story
Why it exists.
Oud Zarian began with a single material: an 80-year-aged oud of extraordinary depth or character. Cécile Zarokian and the Creed family built the rest of the composition around this anchor, sourcing only what could stand beside it with equal conviction. The question was never whether to include a certain material. It was whether a material could earn its place. Bergamot from Calabria appears in the opening, the house's signature citrus sourcing, adding a brief brightness before the oud asserts itself. Black licorice and myrrh in the drydown were selected for their resinous depth, materials with enough presence to support without competing with aged oud. Sandalwood and tonka bean provide warmth without sweetness overload, a careful balance achieved through the cold maceration technique the house still employs.

The Beginning
The philosophy behind Oud Zarian was restraint in service of intensity. Every opening note exists to frame the oud, not compete with it. The bergamot, ginger, and frankincense were chosen specifically for their ability to introduce the darker heart without easing wearers in too gently. Rose centifolia answered the question of what could stand beside aged oud with equal dignity. Black licorice was selected for the drydown precisely because it offers unexpected sweetness, a counterpoint to the resinous heaviness that prevents the base from becoming monolithic.
The Evolution
The fragrance opens with energy and intention. Spicy notes arrive first, asserting themselves with warmth and complexity. Ginger amplifies the opening's brightness, while bergamot adds a fleeting citrus note that lifts the initial intensity. The frankincense presence becomes apparent shortly after, introducing the smoky, resinous character that defines the next phase. At the midpoint, rose centifolia arrives. May rose brings its dense, aromatic presence, and the floral heart develops alongside the deepening oud that has been building beneath the opening notes. The interaction between rose and aged oud is where the fragrance reveals its core identity. The drydown begins with black licorice appearing prominently, its sweet herbal character surprising even experienced wearers. Myrrh then adds its warm balsamic quality, deepening the resinous foundation. Sandalwood and tonka bean complete the transition, their combined creamy warmth settling over the base while oud and patchouli remain steadfast on skin for many hours.
Cultural Impact
Oud Zarian joins a lineage of bold Creed releases designed for the wearer who wants to be remembered. It sits alongside Aventus in the house's modern canon, but where Aventus built its reputation on pineapple and birch, this one stakes its claim with oud and myrrh. The 80-year-aged oud is the anchor. The question it answers: what does Creed do when they don't have to prove anything?
The House
France · Est. 1760
The oldest privately held fragrance dynasty in the world, Creed has supplied royal courts since 1760. Sixth-generation master perfumer Olivier Creed continues the tradition of hand-selecting materials from source — Calabrian bergamot, French ambergris, Haitian vetiver. Aventus alone has spawned an entire subculture. The house stands as living proof that heritage and relevance are not mutually exclusive.

Oud Zarian sounds like something recorded in a stone room with high ceilings, the reverb of a space built to hold incense. Frankincense at the opening, then a pause, then the depth arrives: warm wood, something almost sweet underneath, and a quiet hum of something lived-in. The rose centifolia adds a coolness, a moment of stillness, before the oud anchors everything into something that feels permanent. Close your eyes and you're somewhere old and warm and still.
