The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Complex arrives, and the name itself reads like a confession. John Stephen, the house perfumer, designed this Parfum concentration as a study in tension: herbal against resinous, clean against animalic. Sage and basil open sharp and green, but frankincense and violet move in fast. The name isn't about complexity for its own sake. It's about the contradiction that makes you stop and recalibrate, what you expected versus what's actually burning. The interplay between these notes creates an immediate sense of duality, where each element both supports and challenges the others. Fresh, biting herbs give way to smoke and floral depth, and the whole composition holds together through that tension rather than despite it.
Basil and sage arrive first, their green, slightly anise-like qualities cutting through the air with clarity and bite. These herbs don't perform their usual fresh, casual role here. Instead they serve as a bridge, preparing the skin for something heavier, more contemplative. Frankincense rolls in quickly, bringing smoke and a faint ecclesiastical sweetness, while violet softens the edges just enough to keep the incense from overwhelming. The result feels intentional rather than jarring, each note setting up the next.
The evolution
The opening hits bright, sage's medicinal clarity cutting through basil's green aroma. Neither note lingers long before the composition shifts. Frankincense takes over, smoke rolling through the violet like fog through a half-open window. The leather announces itself with dry, slightly animalic presence, not the polished leather of accessories but the actual material, warm, slightly sour, undeniably present. As the hours pass the herbs fade entirely. What's left is oud, leather, and musk, close to the skin, projecting modestly now but holding steady. The base lingers well beyond the initial development, offering a long dry-down that rewards patience.
Cultural impact
Complex presents itself as a Parfum concentration, placing it within a specific tradition of highly concentrated fragrances designed for depth and longevity. Within niche perfumery, such concentrations are valued for their intensity and the way they interact with skin chemistry over time. The fragrance combines herbaceous and smoky elements in a way that challenges simple categorization, appealing to enthusiasts who seek compositions that resist easy description.
