The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Un Ange Passe emerged in 2011 from the quiet atelier of Bissoumine, the Grasse-based house that began in 2009. Kitty Shpirer, the duo's resident nose, set out to bottle an instant she describes as an angel slipping by, a transparent amber that feels light and airy. The concept leans on the house's language of restraint, where each material earns its place and nothing superfluous remains. For Shpirer, the choice of Ylang-Ylang, Rhubarb, and Mandarin Orange as an opening trio was deliberate: these notes capture light itself, a sunlit clarity that feels immediate and undeniable.
Bissoumine selects notes with a philosophy of restraint. Ylang-Ylang provides the creamy tropical warmth that anchors the opening, Rhubarb adds unexpected tartness, and Mandarin Orange delivers immediate citrus clarity. Star Anise brings an aromatic complexity to the heart that rewards attention, while Jasmine and Rose create depth and softness. The base pairing of Musk and Sandalwood ensures intimacy and comfort, with Amber providing the warm, lingering glow that extends wear without heaviness. The note structure is designed to feel transparent from first spray to final fade.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through its notes like a pas sage through a garden at different times of day. The opening is morning, all brightness and citrus sparkle. Mandarin Orange and Ylang-Ylang create an effervescent, tropical clarity, while Rhubarb adds a vegetable tartness that keeps things grounded and interesting. By midday, the heart emerges with Star Anise, Jasmine, and Rose. Here the fragrance shifts from bright to warm, the aromatic spice of Star Anise threading through the lush florality of Jasmine and the soft powder of Rose. Evening arrives in the drydown, where Musk, Sandalwood, and Amber create an Intimate, skin-close warmth that lingers softly. The progression is fluid, each phase informing the next without hard boundaries.
Cultural impact
Since its 2011 debut, Un Ange Passe has sparked conversation for its almost delicate, fleeting character. Wearers note the opening’s bright spark that quickly fades into a soft, powdery whisper, likening the experience to an angel that passes by unnoticed. Its subtle amber transparency sets it apart from Bissoumine’s richer siblings, earning a niche following among those who favor delicate, momentary scents.
