The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
WE ARE TRIBE is Benetton's collective. PLAY is the line that says you don't have to choose between fitting in and standing out. WE ARE TRIBE COOL drops into this space in 2024, a masculine fragrance that borrows the clean, structural quality of aldehydes and builds something warmer underneath. Perfumer Sophie Labbé was tasked with making cool literal: a scent that opens crisp and holds its composure as the hours pass. The brief didn't ask for safe. It asked for something you'd actually reach for on a Tuesday that still has something to say. That's the tension at the center of this composition, polish without pretension, attitude without aggression. This is the fragrance for someone who notices the details.
Aldehydes are the star move. In men's fragrance, they're the note that signals: this person knows something. Classic masculine perfumery used them heavily, Channel Pour Monsieur, Dior Eau Savage, and they carry that heritage into WE ARE TRIBE COOL. The choice pairs them with lemon and aquatic notes at the top, then pivots to a heart of lavender and ginger. That lavender-ginger combination is interesting, lavender is aromatic and familiar, ginger adds a clean heat that most people read as warmth rather than spice. Together they prevent the composition from feeling retro or heavy. Tonka bean appears in the heart, too, which adds a soft sweetness that rounds the edges without making the scent sweet.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and bright. Lemon zest, aldehydes sparkling on clean skin, the aldehydes give it an almost metallic quality, like cold water on warm stone. Within fifteen minutes the citrus retreats and the heart takes over. Lavender and ginger arrive together, aromatic and warm, with geranium adding a green, slightly floral lift that prevents the lavender from going heavy. The tonka bean whispers underneath, barely there, just enough to keep the heart from feeling too austere. Three hours in, the base arrives. Cedar and vetiver build a woody platform that smells clean rather than sharp. Frankincense adds a faint smoky edge, but it's subtle, the kind of resin that smells like warmth rather than incense. Musk holds everything close to the skin. The drydown is intimate and steady. It doesn't evolve dramatically after hour three, it settles and stays. On fabric, the cedar and vetiver linger into the next day, faintly warm, like the ghost of morning.
Cultural impact
WE ARE TRIBE COOL enters a crowded space: fresh aromatic masculines. What sets it apart is the aldehydic lift, a note that signals knowledge of fragrance history without feeling dated. The WE ARE TRIBE line leans into community and self-expression. PLAY is the boldest chapter. COOL is the one that thinks before it speaks. It's the fragrance equivalent of a person who notices the details, the cuff of a jacket, the scent of a room, the way a Tuesday afternoon can still feel like something worth wearing well.
