The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Colors de Benetton for women expanded the collection with two new flankers, Pink and Blue, both positioned as fresh, youthful expressions of the brand's identity. The launch was managed under Puig's license, continuing a partnership that gives the house access to professional fragrance development while Benetton retains creative direction. Alexis Dadier composed Blue Woman as a modern citrus-floral that stays true to the Benetton spirit. The brief aligned with the brand's broader campaign promoting diversity, multiculturalism, and optimism. The composition opens with sharp citrus, transitions into florals that soften the profile, and settles into a base that keeps everything close to the skin. The structure holds together from start to finish, with each layer building on the one before it.
The most distinctive move is the yuzu and bitter orange pairing in the top notes. Where most fresh fragrances reach for different citrus options, this one uses yuzu with its tart, sharp character, alongside bitter orange for a more assertive citrus opening than the standard alternative. The mate accord in the heart is the other differentiator. Mate brings a mild bitterness and herbal quality that prevents the white florals from reading as purely sweet.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Yuzu and bitter orange arrive sharp, with lemon adding a clean brightness that does not sweeten the citrus. The tartness asserts itself before the florals arrive. The hand-off happens as orange blossom and freesia emerge together, softening the citrus edge without erasing it. The mate accord keeps the heart grounded, adding a slight herbal bitterness that prevents the florals from reading as purely sweet. The composition settles into something warmer and more intimate. The drydown belongs to the musk and cedar. The tonka bean adds a faint sweetness that rounds the base without competing with the florals. The fragrance remains present in its final stage as a close, skin-warm scent that lingers without projecting. The sillage stays moderate throughout. You will smell it. The room will not.
Cultural impact
Blue Woman sits in the accessible citrus-floral category, the kind of fragrance that functions as a daily wardrobe staple rather than a statement piece. The 2016 launch arrived as part of a broader refresh of the Colors de Benetton line, aligning with the brand's campaign promoting diversity and optimism. Within that context, Blue Woman reads as the quieter of the two flankers, less statement, more presence. It occupies a space where versatility matters more than novelty, offering a scent that adapts to different occasions without demanding attention.
