The beginning
Red Crown arrived in 2017 as a composition from Auphorie, a house whose work draws on Asian floral traditions rendered through a contemporary lens. The scent was crafted by brothers Eugene Au and Emrys Au, who blended botanical references into a unified composition. The name conjures an image of regal natural beauty at the height of its flowering. It was released as a limited edition extrait, and has since been discontinued and vaulted, making remaining bottles highly uncommon for those who encountered it during its brief production run. Those fortunate enough to have experienced Red Crown often describe the opening as a generous effusion of ripe fruit, with peach and plum lending a soft, juicy sweetness that feels almost edible in its immediacy.
What sets Red Crown apart is its layering of four distinct blossoms, peach, plum, cherry, and the rarer hawthorn, into a single coherent narrative rather than treating them as separate top notes. Each flower contributes its own character: the peach and plum bring that lush, almost candied sweetness, while cherry introduces a sharper, more luminous quality that lifts the whole arrangement. Hawthorn weaves through with its faintly almond-like, hay-inflected softness, giving the heart a slightly wild, pastoral undertone that grounds the sweeter elements.
The evolution
The opening is a rush of soft petals, peach blossom and plum blossom arriving together like spring compressed into liquid. Hawthorn adds a green, slightly almond-like edge that keeps things from going saccharine. Within 15 minutes, the florals settle into their full arrangement: cherry blossom, magnolia, peony, and jasmine weaving through a base of oolong tea, which lends a dry, tannic quality that feels more like a quiet garden than a bouquet. Bamboo and pine introduce a subtle woody freshness that lifts the composition without sharpening it. By the second hour, the florals begin to recede, and the warmer materials take over: sandalwood and cedar emerge as the backbone, with amber and musk providing a skin-close warmth. Cashmere wood adds a soft, almost tactile quality. On skin, the drydown holds for several hours, reading as a gentle woody floral with a persistent softness, like cashmere warmed by body heat. The next day, faint traces of sandalwood and amber linger on fabric.
