Why it exists.
The beginning
Eugene and Emrys Au composed this extrait in 2020, and Song Of Everlasting Sorrow marks a turn toward a register their earlier Auphorie releases had avoided: the meeting of courtly romance and something feral beneath. Lychee and pear blossom carry the sweetness of a tended garden in peak bloom, petals catching the light after a warm rain. Chinese incense and oud carry the centuries, their resinous weight pressing the airy florals down into something ancient and tactile. The composition holds that tension without resolving it, sweetness leaning against smoke, fruit leaning against wood. It's a deliberate friction, and it defines the composition's strange gravity.
What sets this composition apart is its refusal to choose between delicacy and darkness. Song Of Everlasting Sorrow threads pear blossom and white tea through agarwood and Chinese incense, then grounds it all in ambergris. The immortelle adds a maple-curry edge that pushes the floral heart away from soap and toward something edible, almost burnt, like the sticky residue at the bottom of a dessert pan. The pear blossom stays luminous and translucent while the oud darkens at its edges, and that contrast runs through every phase of the wear.
The evolution
The opening belongs to fruit. Lychee and pear blossom arrive together, juicy and slightly tart, with the mulberry leaf lending a green tea bitterness underneath. White tea keeps the top from veering into candy territory, its dry astringency acting as a kind of structural beam for everything sweet. As the composition settles, Chinese rose and peony push through the fruit, and the oud surfaces, not as something raw or fecal but as polished wood, a dark warmth that reads more like stained timber than like an animal. Immortelle brings that burnt-maple curl, the kind of smoke that doesn't smell like a fire but like something caramelized at the edges, slow heat working through sugar. Ginger flashes bright and disappears, a sharp accent that briefly cuts through the resinous warmth before fading.
