The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iris Macchiato is a limited edition extrait de parfum released in 2018 at a concentration of 33%. The fragrance pairs coffee and iris, two notes that occupy opposite ends of the fragrance spectrum. One is bitter, warm, almost aggressive; the other is cool, powdery, and cerebral. The brand frames it as a question: 'Iris tainted with coffee? Coffee kissed by iris?' The tension between these opposing characters is exactly what the fragrance was built to explore. Coffee brings its dark, robust intensity while iris lends its delicate, almost ethereal powdery quality. Together they create something unexpected, a dialogue between warmth and coolness that gives the composition its distinctive character.
What makes Iris Macchiato structurally interesting is how the iris doesn't arrive late as a formality, it's present from the opening, threading through the entire arc rather than appearing only to round things off. Most fragrances treat iris as a heart or base note that fades. Here, it's a constant. The espresso note is unusually realistic for a perfume context: not roasted-woody or smoky, but the actual smell of a fresh pot, bitter and immediate. Vanilla bean and tonka bean then sweeten the deal without making the composition cloying, they extend the coffee's warmth rather than replacing it. The result is a fragrance that manages to feel both energizing and soft, which is harder to achieve than it sounds.
The evolution
The opening is espresso, immediate, dark, slightly astringent. No preamble. Within the first quarter hour the iris arrives to cool it down, but not to soften it into submission. The two notes coexist in a kind of productive tension, each asserting itself without overwhelming the other. As time passes, the vanilla bean and tonka begin to round the edges, and the composition shifts from energizing to warm. The heart of the fragrance reveals its depth, the coffee and iris continuing their conversation while the sweet, creamy elements add richness and complexity. The base notes then begin their slow settle: sandalwood and benzoin form a creamy, almost lotion-like warmth, while the patchouli keeps things earthy and grounded underneath. The musk is the final note to arrive and the last to leave, close to the skin, intimate, faintly sweet.
Cultural impact
Iris Macchiato was a limited edition extrait built around a coffee-iris pairing that pushed beyond conventional fragrance boundaries. As part of an already distinctive house, it represented a particular point of view on what perfume could accomplish. The fragrance drew attention for the unusual contrast it achieved and the quality of its execution at an extraits concentration. Those who encountered it responded to the boldness of the concept and the sophistication of its realization.
