Eugene Au
Born in Hong Kong and raised amid the bustling markets of his family’s spice shop, Eugene Au learned early how raw materials speak to memory. He earned a chemistry degree in Australia, where a summer internship at a boutique lab sparked his fascination with aroma molecules. After three years of formal training at a perfumery school, he joined the boutique house David Pirrotta as a sales liaison, translating technical briefs into client‑friendly narratives. The role introduced him to the independent fragrance community and led to his first commission for Auphorie, the daring “Binturong.” In 2012 he co‑hosted the Artisan Fragrance Salon, a gathering that connected emerging noses with collectors. Since moving to Thoughtforms, he balances creation with mentorship, guiding younger perfumers while refining his own palette.

How Eugene composes
His technique blends classic French structure with an Asian sensibility for texture. He layers citrus and green accords before anchoring them with earthy woods such as sandalwood and oud, then adds a whisper of fermented notes to create depth. He prefers natural absolutes—nard, jasmine, and tonka bean—paired with synthetics that sharpen focus, like iso e super or calone. In the lab he works quickly, sketching formulas on paper before testing them on blotters, allowing the raw material’s character to dictate the final composition.
Philosophy
What drives Eugene
Eugene approaches scent as a conversation between material and mind. He believes each accord should resolve like a well‑written sentence, clear and purposeful. Chemistry gives him precision; his childhood exposure to spices gives him intuition. He favors contrasts that reveal themselves over time, letting bright top notes fade to reveal a quiet, resonant heart. Sustainability guides his ingredient choices, and he seeks suppliers who share his respect for provenance. Ultimately he aims to craft fragrances that anchor a moment, inviting the wearer to pause and listen.
