The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Attar Al Has, founded in Turkey in 2021, set out to revive Ottoman attar traditions with modern single-note concentrates. When the brand decided to capture the exotic allure of tonka bean, perfumer Karine Vinchon-Spehner answered the call in 2022. She understood that the assignment demanded more than a straightforward tonka soliflore. Working within the brand's commitment to bold, concentrated compositions, she built outward from the tonka bean, crafting a fragrance that honors the ingredient's sweet, faceted character while adding unexpected dimensions.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: tonka bean's sweetness requires structural tension to avoid cloying. Black pepper and grapefruit provide that tension in the opening, creating an appetizing contrast that primes the wearer for the warm, powdery heart. Rose and cocoa share an inherent affinity, their combination producing a nuanced effect that feels both familiar and distinctive. In the base, the woody notes and vetiver serve a dual purpose, extending longevity while grounding the sweetness in something more complex and mysterious.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a striking contrast: the bright, slightly tart brightness of grapefruit paired with the sharp, warming heat of black pepper. This opening arrests attention and signals that this is not a typical gourmand exercise. As the top notes recede, the heart emerges with rose at its center, softened by cocoa's creamy, slightly bitter richness. Amber adds warmth while lavender contributes a subtle herbal quality that keeps the heart from becoming overly sweet. The transition to the base marks a shift toward sensuality and depth, where tonka bean's coumarin sweetness melds with vanilla's creaminess. Patchouli brings its earthy, slightly mossy character while guaiac wood contributes smoky, leathery nuances. Vetiver anchors the composition with a dry, root-like finish that ensures the fragrance evolves gracefully over many hours on skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Wonderful Tonka has become a reference point for tonka‑centric attars, earning mentions in niche fragrance blogs for its transparent ingredient list and balanced spice‑sweet profile. Collectors appreciate its limited‑batch release, which adds a sense of rarity, while the perfume’s warm, gourmand edge resonates with those seeking a sophisticated alternative to typical sweet woods.
