The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Irida takes its name from the Greek goddess of the rainbow, the messenger who carried stories between worlds. The connection to Iris as a flower runs deeper than coincidence: the rhizome of Iris pallida must age for years before it yields the powdery, slightly metallic character that makes the note unmistakable. For this Extrait, Angelos Balamis focused on achieving a balance where the orris takes center stage. The result is a fragrance that asks something specific of its wearer, and rewards those who answer.
What makes Irida Extrait worth the price isn't the story. It's the quantity of expensive raw material. The orris butter alone carries 15% irones. The two separate absolutes contribute 68% and 80% irones respectively, sourced from Iris Pallida cultivated in France's Loire Valley through Biolandes. That's extraordinary concentration by any standard, not just niche perfumery. The aged East Indian sandalwood, the labdanum resinoid, the cistus absolute, they all matter. But the orris is the point. Everything else just gives it somewhere to land.
The evolution
The opening hits cool and green, violet leaf absolute and Tunisian neroli creating that dewy, slightly metallic quality that signals the orris is coming. Within minutes, the powder takes over. Not sweet powder. Cold powder. The kind that smells like clean starch rather than dessert. Jasmine threads warmth through the heart while carrot seed adds a carroty sweetness, and the clove and cinnamon introduce spice without dominating. As the top notes fade, the base emerges: sandalwood, vetiver, labdanum, guaiac wood. Warm, woody, slightly smoky. The iris powder never fully disappears, it softens, settles into the composition like a memory. The sillage becomes more intimate as time passes, and the scent lingers on skin while maintaining its presence throughout the wear.
Cultural impact
The 2023 Extrait presents an intriguing take on orris, making it a notable entry in the house's collection. Its distinctive character offers something for those who appreciate thoughtful fragrance composition. The work speaks to a certain sensibility, one that values depth and nuance in scent.
