Grâce D'Orient arrived in 2020 from Angelos Balamis under his own label, Angelos Créations Olfactives. The title carries a certain romance, a nod toward the spice roads and incense trails that shaped how perfumery learned to smell before the category fractured into a thousand subgenres. Balamis built the composition around absolutes, materials with a density that no modern molecule quite replicates, and the result reads less like a contemporary indie release than a deliberate return to an older way of constructing scent. What you smell on the skin is a spicy-oriental that commits to its own weight, refusing to thin itself into something palatable for current tastes.
What's worth noting is the material quality Balamis pulled together. Egyptian jasminum grandiflorum absolute, Turkish damask rose absolute, orris butter, labdanum absolute, vanilla absolute, Siam benzoin. That is not a budget pyramid, and reading those names side by side tells you something about the intentions behind the bottle. Calabrian bergamot opens the door bright and citrusy before the spice-and-resin architecture takes over, the kind of transition that happens smoothly rather than abruptly.
