The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Angel Schlesser's Mediterranean Cypress was conceived as a fragrant tribute to the wind-swept pine-covered hills of the Spanish coast. In 2022, perfumer Alexis Grugeon of DSM-Firmenich set out to bottle that landscape, centering the composition around sustainably sourced cypress from the Pyrenees. The brief was clear: capture the feeling of Mediterranean air moving through coastal forest, using materials that honored both the region's character and a contemporary sensibility. Bergamot and lavender anchor the opening, recalling the herbs that grow wild along Iberian coastlines, while cardamom adds a subtle warmth that nods to the region's spice trade history.
The note architecture reflects a philosophy of contrast and resolution. Opening with citrus and spice creates warmth and invitation, transitioning through a cool, green heart that refreshes and refocuses the composition, and arriving at a woody, slightly sweet base that grounds the wearer in the Mediterranean landscape the fragrance celebrates. The prominence of mint in the heart phase is deliberate, designed to evoke the sensation of cool coastal breeze against sun-warmed skin. Pairing this with cypress and cedarwood creates a woodiness that is structured rather than linear, with each material contributing distinct texture: cypress for clarity, cedarwood for structure, sandalwood for warmth.
The evolution
The opening burst of bergamot, cardamom, and lavender establishes a bright, herbaceous foundation that feels immediately coastal and alive. Within minutes, mint takes over in the heart, delivering a sharp coolness that reshapes the composition entirely. This mint-forward transition is where Mediterranean Cypress reveals its personality, shifting from sunny warmth to something more restrained and green. Iris and jasmine soften the mint's edge, introducing powdery and floral dimensions that prevent the heart from feeling clinical. As the drydown settles, cypress emerges to claim its rightful place, supported by cedarwood and sandalwood in a woody base that extends the fragrance's longevity while maintaining the cool, natural character established in the heart. Tonka bean provides just enough sweetness to keep the drydown from feeling austere.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Mediterranean Cypress has become a go‑to for those seeking a sun‑kissed, gender‑fluid scent that feels both crisp and grounded. Wearers often note its suitability for summer evenings on Mediterranean terraces, where the citrus‑spice opening feels like a sea breeze and the cypress drydown echoes the surrounding pine groves. Its balanced profile has earned it a steady following among collectors who value subtle elegance over flash.
