Why it exists.
The beginning
Rouge Elixir arrived in 2024 as part of Anfar London's Serie de Velvet collection. The name does what it says: this is elixir territory, not cologne. Concentrated, unapologetic, and tuned for a wearer who treats fragrance as part of the look rather than an afterthought. Perfumer Mushtaque Anfar shaped it around a tension that's central to the house's recent work. The composition opens with Brazilian rosewood and clove, a pairing that sets the tone before the first drydown even begins. Rose and carnation hold the center without tipping into sweetness, their florals kept grounded by the warmth of the spice.
The choice to pair Brazilian rosewood with clove at the top is deliberate. Rosewood brings a rounded warmth into the opening, while clove cuts in with a sharpness that keeps the first impression from collapsing into something purely sweet. In the heart, carnation and cinnamon do the heavy lifting. Carnation carries a clove-like pungency of its own, which extends that initial heat rather than replacing it, and cinnamon threads through the rose to keep the florals grounded. The base is where the composition shows its patience.
The evolution
The opening belongs to rosewood and clove. They land together, almost simultaneously, with the wood's rounded resin sweetness taking the edge off the clove's burn. Mandarin orange and lemon verbena flicker in and out, adding brightness that lifts the whole opening off the skin rather than letting it sink in. The transition happens quietly. The clove recedes just enough for carnation and cinnamon to step forward. Rose and lily of the valley arrive with them, but softly. This isn't a floral heart that demands to be smelled. It hums underneath the spice, giving it shape rather than competing with it. The cinnamon warms the middle phase into something that feels closer to amber than to fresh flowers. As the hours pass, the base settles in fully. Myrrh and vanilla arrive first, soft and resinous, then amber takes over, warming the whole composition into a golden, slightly sweet close.
