The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nero Velours arrived in 2024 as part of Anfar London's Serie de Velvet. Perfumer Ahmedullah Anfar constructed this around a coffee-tea duality that recalls the warmth of karak chai, the kind brewed strong, shared between people who have time to sit with it. The coffee note brings a roasted, slightly bitter richness that feels familiar and grounded, while the tea note adds a smooth, astringent quality that keeps the blend from tipping into heaviness. It's a fragrance that understands wanting something substantial without it being loud.
What makes the structure unusual is the coffee-tea top: arabica coffee and assam tea together, a combination that rarely appears in Western perfumery but is familiar across South Asian and Middle Eastern traditions. The coffee provides bitterness and body; the tea softens it, adds a tannic edge that keeps the opening from going too dark. From there, clove and nutmeg warm the heart, while the base, patchouli, moss, ambergris, cashmeran, builds into something that lasts well beyond a workday. It's a composition that rewards patience.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: tangerine and bergamot arrive first, bright and citrus-forward, followed immediately by the arabica coffee and black tea. Within twenty minutes, the citrus recedes and the coffee-tea-spice axis takes over, clove and nutmeg warming the heart while the base begins to settle. By the second hour, patchouli and moss dominate, with ambergris adding a salty, animalic depth that keeps everything grounded. The drydown, four to six hours in, is where this fragrance earns its name: velvety, dark, close to the skin. Cashmeran adds a synthetic musk softness that rounds the edges. On fabric, it lingers overnight.
Cultural impact
Nero Velours launched in 2024. The coffee-tea-spice structure gives it a distinct position among contemporary niche releases. The Serie de Velvet collection embraces dark, velvety aesthetics paired with aromatic complexity. Nero Velours carries that sensibility forward, weaving rich coffee notes and warm tea undertones with a lingering spice warmth that lends the fragrance an earthy, intimate depth. The composition evolves across the wear, with the coffee and tea interplay providing a dynamic foundation while the spice threads through the heart and the base notes leave a quiet, lasting impression.
