The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud and seaweed form the core of Ashy Wood by Ahmedullah Anfar. The oud provides a deep, resinous warmth that serves as the fragrance's foundation, while the seaweed adds a mineral, marine character that brings something unexpected to the composition. Together these materials create a fragrance that operates in quieter registers, a scent that prefers to linger rather than announce itself, staying close to the skin while maintaining a presence that endures.
Cognac and seaweed make up the top accord, an unusual pairing that works in practice. The spirit note contributes warmth without sweetness. The marine note brings minerality without sharpness. Oakmoss provides a green, slightly damp character that allows the opening to settle before the rest of the composition develops. This is a fragrance that builds gradually, prioritizing depth over immediate impact.
The evolution
Cognac and seaweed arrive together at the opening, warm spirit and mineral brine in combination. Hedione adds a transparent floral nuance that layers beneath both. Cinnamon announces itself as the top fades, warm and spicy, shifting the composition's character. The marine note persists alongside oud and orange blossom in the middle, the fragrance building in complexity. Amber, praline, sandalwood, and patchouli make up the base, sweet woods and warm resin that remain close to the skin. The drydown endures without dominating the wearer or the space around them.
Cultural impact
Ashy Wood introduces marine elements to Anfar's collection, a notable departure from the house's other releases. The seaweed and cognac combination gives the fragrance a distinctive character that resists easy comparison to other woods in the lineup.
