The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Act 1, Scene 3 arrived in 2023, composed by Kevin Mathys in collaboration with CPL Aromas. The name reads like a play cue, a moment after the action has already happened, and the composition follows that script. It opens with dark fruit, blackcurrant and pomegranate spiked with davana's fermented edge, then drops you straight into a room where leather, iris, and rose have already been talking for an hour. There's no setup. You're catching the scene mid-sentence, and you have to lean in to find where you are.
What makes this composition work is the tension between its textures. Davana brings a boozy, almost fermented sweetness that most fruity florals would round off into something polite. Here it leans into leather and dry woods, creating friction. Iris does the heavy lifting in the middle, powdery and cool, acting as a counterweight to the smoky base. The result reads more like a contemporary oriental floral than a typical fruity floral, closer to a wardrobe than a perfume counter.
The evolution
The opening is where the fruit does its loudest work. Blackcurrant hits sharp and almost wine-like, pomegranate adding a tart sweetness underneath, and davana weaving through with something closer to plum liqueur or fermenting stone fruit. It smells like the start of something, a little reckless, a little sweet, the kind of introduction that pulls you in rather than easing you gently. The fruit softens but doesn't vanish. The iris steps forward, dry and powdery, with rose tucked behind it, and the two begin a quiet conversation, neither one overpowering the other, more like two voices settling into the same room. Not aggressive but present, leather arrives next, the kind you find in a secondhand bookshop, worn paper and cracked binding, the smell of stories already lived inside.
Cultural impact
Act 1, Scene 3 sits in an interesting space, composed with a seriousness that comes through in the materials themselves, the leather, the iris, the resinous warmth underneath. It's the kind of scent that rewards layering over seasons, particularly in cooler months when the heavier notes have something to push against. The composition leans into its own intent, offering a take on the leathery oriental style that takes its materials seriously.
