The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Essenza di un'Isola collection takes its name seriously. For Altrove, the reference point is Montecristo, the small island southwest of Elba. Unspoiled. Nearly unreachable. The kind of place that exists more as idea than destination. Montecristo has long captured the imagination precisely because of its inaccessibility, its reputation as a wild and solitary outpost in the Tuscan waters. The fragrance captures not the postcard version of island life, but the version you find when you go further. When you push past the obvious routes into something wilder, quieter, and older. Altrove, which translates to elsewhere, was built for that kind of crossing.
The structure of this composition tells you everything about its intent. Altrove opens with juniper and cypress, immediately pivoting toward something darker. The leather-tobacco heart isn't accidental. It's a deliberate move away from the expected coastal freshness. Iris appears as a bridge between these two worlds, cool and powdery against the warmth coming up from below. The frankincense in the base brings depth and resinous warmth. This is an island fragrance that refused to be obvious about it.
The evolution
The opening hits crisp and green, juniper and cypress in equal measure, with an herbal edge that reads more mountain than coast. The juniper and cypress linger for a while before the leather begins to push through. Not aggressive leather. The animalic, slightly smoky variety that brings depth and character to a composition. The tobacco amplifies this effect, adding body and presence. Jasmine and rose arrive mid-drydown, adding a floral lift that prevents the whole thing from becoming too heavy. They're keeping the darkness in check, maintaining wearability. The frankincense takes over as everything else fades, and this is where Altrove shows its true character. The resinous drydown holds for hours, close to the skin, smoky, warm, the kind of scent that someone notices only when they're standing next to you. The arbutus berry adds an earthy, slightly bitter finish that grounds everything.
Cultural impact
Altrove occupies an interesting position in the Essenza di un'Isola lineup, offering a more grounded character compared to other offerings in the collection. Wearers describe it as a scent for those who appreciate something beyond the obvious. The comparison to Antaeus by Amouage surfaces in community discussions, which tells you something about the leather-incense territory this fragrance operates in. It's not trying to compete with mass-market ambroxan fragrances or fresh citrus releases. It's building something more deliberate, for a different kind of wearer.
