A house, in its own words
The origins of Acqua dell'Elba trace to the late 1990s, when three individuals from the same family began working toward a shared vision. Fabio Murzi, Chiara Murzi, and Marco Turoni sought to recreate the aromatic character of their home environment on Elba island. Their approach drew from the tradition of Renaissance-era Italian workshops, where artisans produced work deeply connected to their local surroundings. By around 2000, the founders had established their laboratory in Marciana Marina, the ancient coastal hamlet that remains the operational center of the business. Here, Chiara, Fabio, and Marco have conducted the hands-on work of developing and producing fragrances for more than two decades. The brand grew from this small-island base into a collection known for scents that reference the marine environment, pine groves, and Mediterranean vegetation of Tuscany. The family character of the business has persisted, with the same founders maintaining their roles in developing new fragrances and overseeing production. Over the years, the collection has expanded to include multiple lines, including the Essenza di un'Isola series and various gender-specific offerings. This history reflects an approach to perfumery rooted in personal attachment to a specific landscape rather than in the larger commercial fragrance industry.
Acqua dell'Elba operates from the conviction that a fragrance house should draw its identity from a particular place. Rather than pursuing broad market appeal, the founders sought to translate the sensory experience of living on Elba into liquid form. This means capturing elements such as salt air, coastal vegetation, and the particular quality of light over the Mediterranean. The founders have described their aim as bottling the essence of their home, a goal that shapes decisions throughout the creative process. The brand positions itself in contrast to mass-market fragrance production, emphasizing instead the intimate connection between a scent and its place of origin. This philosophy also extends to how the products are made. The laboratory in Marciana Marina serves not merely as a production facility but as the conceptual origin point where the founders' lived experience of the island informs each new fragrance. The approach values authenticity of inspiration over trend-following, producing scents that reflect a specific landscape rather than prevailing fashion.
