A house, in its own words
Serra & Fonseca was founded in 2012 on a large estate in Emilia Romagna, a region of northern Italy known for castles, oak groves and agricultural landscapes. The estate gives the house a distinctive setting for fragrance creation, with lavender, iris and helichrysum cultivated directly on site. The name Serra & Fonseca brings together the Italian surname tradition of the founders and the Portuguese surname Fonseca, suggesting a house shaped by a meeting of cultures. The early catalogue established several of the ideas that still define the brand: a strong connection with plants, a collection of compositions named with an Italian sensibility and the use of contrasting aromatic materials. La Zagara, La Violetta and La Rosa all appeared in 2014, followed by Eau de Moi in 2016 and the botanical names il Patchouli, il Vetyver and il Narciso. These releases form the visible foundation of a relatively young fragrance house, one that treats the estate and its cultivated materials as part of the creative identity rather than as a decorative setting. The history of Serra & Fonseca is therefore less about inherited corporate legacy and more about establishing a clear place for perfumery in the Italian countryside. The central idea behind Serra & Fonseca is to connect fragrance with the living landscape. The house grows aromatic plants on its Emilia Romagna estate and uses them as a starting point for compositions built around clear olfactory themes. Names such as La Rosa, il Patchouli, il Vetyver and il Narciso make the ingredient or mood immediately legible, while Eau de Moi introduces a more personal register that points toward intimacy and the individual wearer. The approach appears to value directness over abstraction, allowing rose, patchouli, vetiver or iris to remain recognizable while living within a broader composition. Cultivation also gives the brand a coherent creative boundary: the estate is not simply the backdrop to the perfumes, but the source of their material vocabulary. Serra & Fonseca expresses this through a restrained Italian sensibility, placing botanical character, place and the pleasure of scent at the centre of its identity.
