The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
If Signature Royale X was clean fun, then XXX is what happens after. Launched in 2022, this entry in Zaharoff's Signature Royale line was composed by Claude Dir, whose structural sensibility shapes the architecture of the scent from the first spritz to the last trace of drydown. The brief on paper looks straightforward: bergamot, lavender, and cardamom layered over a woody-oud foundation. But XXX doesn't stay on paper. It pushes those familiar materials past comfort, into territory where musk reads less like fabric softener and more like skin, where oud stops being decorative and starts telling the truth. Dir worked alongside Mane on the formulation, lending the industrial precision that the house's most concentrated formats demand.
What's genuinely interesting here is the sourcing. Guatemalan cardamom at the top introduces a green, slightly cool register that gives the spice a distinctive lift. The heart pairs allspice with Himalayan juniper and Virginia cedar leaf, pulling the composition away from standard oriental territory into something more aromatic, more botanical, more raw. The cedar leaf in particular adds a dry, almost resinous snap that keeps the warmer spices honest. Then the base pulls Indonesian patchouli, Australian sandalwood, Chinese oud, and benzoin into one heavy curtain.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Bergamot and citrus zip across the top in the first few minutes, with lavender softening the edges and cardamom adding that cool, green spice underneath. It smells like a good barbershop that hasn't decided what it wants to be yet, bright and soapy but with something sharper lurking just below the foam. Then the heart fully arrives, and the temperature shifts. Allspice warms up first, then juniper sharpens the air, and cedar leaf adds this dry, almost pencil-shaving quality that keeps the whole thing from collapsing into sweetness. This is the most interesting phase because the composition briefly smells like two different fragrances: the bright, soapy opening still clinging to your shirt collar while something darker and woodier builds underneath.
Cultural impact
XXX occupies a distinctive place in the broader fragrance conversation. Its combination of oud, patchouli, sandalwood, and musk places it firmly within the heavier, more animalic territory of niche perfumery, where skin-scent and projection matter more than conventional freshness. The musk-forward character of the composition gives it an intimate, almost second-skin quality that appeals to wearers seeking something personal rather than performative.
