The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Zaharoff founded the label in Milan in 1997, positioning itself at the intersection of Italian craftsmanship and modern American sensibility. The brand favors depth and material quality over trending accords, and Signature Royale X reflects that philosophy. Developed over two years in Zaharoff's atelier under perfumer Claude Dir of Mane, the extrait prioritizes material honesty over novelty, pairing familiar aromatic materials with rare natural extracts to create something that feels both grounded and surprising.
The note architecture reflects Zaharoff's belief that a great fragrance should reward attention. The opening citruses and lavender provide immediate recognition, but the heart of juniper and allspice demands patience, revealing themselves only as the top notes thin. The base, anchored by oud, sandalwood, and leather, represents the label's commitment to materials that age beautifully on skin, developing character rather than simply fading. Each layer serves a purpose: the opening attracts, the heart intrigues, and the drydown retains.
The evolution
The opening hits with the clarity of a citrus Cologne before lavender and cardamom introduce ambiguity. Is this fresh or warm? The answer arrives in the heart: juniper's gin-like dryness and cedar needles' green bite establish a firmly masculine aromatic register, while allspice keeps the temperature elevated without tipping into sweetness. As the heart ages, the drydown begins its slow reveal, musk and benzoin softening the edges before sandalwood introduces creaminess, oud brings resinous darkness, and leather locks in with a fossilized warmth that patchouli, vetiver, and labdanum extend for hours on end.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Royale X has become a polarising staple among collectors who crave a scent that wears its animalic heart on the sleeve. Wearers describe it as the perfume equivalent of a well‑tailored suit that suddenly reveals a hidden leather jacket, bold, unapologetic, and unmistakably masculine. Its raw oud and musk have sparked online debates, cementing its place as a conversation starter in niche circles, while its polished citrus opening keeps it approachable enough for evening outings.
