The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Signature Pour Homme arrived in 2018 as a Zaharoff fragrance that asked for nothing from the wearer. The house had built a reputation on menswear and fragrance, focusing on material quality over marketing noise. This was the fragrance meant to distill that approach into something you could wear every day without explaining yourself. Perfumer Claude Dir worked with a brief that sounds simple on paper: lavender to open, sandalwood to close, and enough complexity in between to reward attention. The execution is where it gets interesting. The lavender gives an immediate herbal brightness that feels clean and approachable, the kind of opening that announces itself without demanding attention. There's a softness to it that makes the transition feel natural rather than abrupt.
What makes Signature Pour Homme notable is its structure, a fougère at heart, but one with its own particular character. The heart holds Indonesian oud and Florentine iris in unusual balance: the oud provides depth and that slightly animalic whisper, while the iris softens the edges into something powdery and refined rather than raw. The combination creates a middle ground that feels both traditional and contemporary at once. The base reinforces this through Ethiopian frankincense and Chinese myrrh, two resins that add smoke without aggression, warmth without sweetness.
The evolution
The opening salvo is French lavender and ripe pear, a sweet, aromatic burst that reads clean and immediately likeable. For the first thirty minutes, cardamom and Zanzibar black pepper build underneath, adding warmth without heat. The handoff happens around the one-hour mark when the heart notes arrive. Indonesian oud takes the stage first, settling into the skin with Florentine iris and cedarwood. This middle phase is where the fragrance shows its complexity, slightly powdery, with the balsam fir providing structure that keeps everything from drifting soft. The cedar adds a woody undertone that becomes more apparent as the heart develops. By the time the base notes assert themselves, the fragrance has moved through its aromatic and woody phases into something warmer and more resinous.
Cultural impact
Signature Pour Homme occupies a specific space in the masculine fragrance landscape, woody, aromatic, fougère-forward but without the soapy freshness that often defines the category. The oud-and-iris heart gives it enough complexity to reward attention, while the overall structure keeps it accessible for everyday wear. The moderate sillage makes it practical for professional settings without becoming intrusive, and the fragrance maintains its character across different seasons. Its versatility allows it to work in various contexts, from office environments to more casual settings, without feeling out of place in either situation.
