The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The number isn't decorative. Limited 71 is named for 1971, the year the United Arab Emirates became one. Seven emirates, one identity. The fragrance honors that transformation, the idea that separate things can become unified. Widian, founded by Ali Al Jaberi in Abu Dhabi in 2014, built its identity on translating Arabian heritage into modern fragrance language. This Limited Collection piece, released in 2016, carries that ambition further than most. Only 350 pieces exist. Each one is numbered. The bottle is a statement, not a accessory.
Jordi Fernández approached Limited 71 as a composition in three movements. First: citrus and spice, the bergamot and coriander creating an immediate brightness that catches attention. Second: the smoke and oud arrive, with ambergris adding that animalic warmth that separates this from safer compositions. Third: the drydown of white musk, incense, and amber that anchors everything that came before. The structure is deliberate. The layering is what makes this worth wearing repeatedly, discovering new details with each encounter.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with authority. Bergamot cuts bright, coriander adds an herbal lift, and the nutmeg provides warmth underneath. Thirty minutes in, the smoke makes its entrance. Not dramatic, just present. The oud settles beside it, and the ambergris adds that animalic depth that some people lean toward and others lean away from. Patchouli provides the earthiness to keep everything grounded. By hour four, the incense takes over as the dominant voice, with white musk and amber creating a warm, intimate drydown that doesn't fully disappear. The longevity is exceptional. On most skin, this holds for ten hours or more. The sillage remains strong throughout, projecting from the skin with conviction. The next morning, there's still something there, faint but present, like the memory of a fire rather than the fire itself.
Cultural impact
Limited 71 arrived at a moment when fragrance culture was hungry for boldness. The oud-smoke-animalic combination speaks to a wearer who wants something with presence, something that makes a statement without requiring explanation. It's found its audience among those who've moved past safe compositions and want something that matches their own confidence.
