The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Luban, the Arabic word for frankincense, carries the weight of ancient trade routes and desert ritual. The brand spent years sourcing rare Arabian raw materials before creating this house, blending heritage ingredients into contemporary forms. Perfumer Randa Hammami approached Luban as a study in contrast: taking the resinous, ceremonial history of frankincense and making it personal. The result is an oriental floral amber that introduces frankincense in a sensual, intimate way, not the monumental incense of grand spaces, but the warmth held close to skin. Each spray carries the ghost of smoke and sacred tradition, yet feels modern enough for everyday wear, striking that rare balance between reverence and accessibility.
The real tension lives in the top notes. Strawberry and cardamom is an unexpected pairing for a fragrance anchored in oud and sandalwood, fruity-sweet meets warm spice without the safety of a predictable oriental structure. Bulgarian rose and gardenia form the heart, but they don't arrive immediately; the strawberry lingers, giving Luban a modernity that traditional oriental compositions rarely attempt. The base, oud, sandalwood, tonka bean, white amber, white musk, provides the warmth expected from the genre, but the addition of cedar keeps it from becoming heavy. What makes Luban interesting is that it uses the same materials as countless oriental fragrances yet arrives somewhere different.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with cardamom's warmth and strawberry's unexpected sweetness. Bergamot adds a citrus brightness that prevents the sweetness from cloying. Pink pepper threads through, keeping the start sharp enough to demand attention. The heart takes its time. Bulgarian rose and gardenia don't burst in, they arrive gradually, weaving through the fading sweetness like a conversation finding its real subject. The drydown is where Luban earns its name. Oud, sandalwood, and cedar arrive together, warm and resinous, grounded by tonka bean and white amber. The white musk keeps everything close to the skin rather than projecting outward. On fabric especially, the base notes linger well into the next day, their warmth intimate and persistent, wrapping the wearer in a soft embrace that speaks to the fragrance's deep character.
Cultural impact
Luban fits Widian's established identity, continuing the house's tradition of bridging Arabian heritage with contemporary perfumery. The release positions frankincense at the center of something warmer and more approachable than traditional oriental compositions, using rose and gardenia to soften the material's historical intensity. The Limited Collection framing adds exclusivity; Luban feels like an invitation, a rare opportunity to experience something special without pretense or exclusivity barriers that would keep most noses away.
