The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jasmynal II started life as a JINX classic, then Vivace asked Arthur Clayton Emrick to revisit it. What arrived in 2025 is less a reissue than a reconstruction, and the differences show up everywhere you look. This is a reimagining. Not a redux. The composition still leans on the materials Vivace built its name around. Indonesian sandalwood. Cambodian oud. Kashmiri deer musk. Each one carries its own geography, its own way of arriving on skin. But Emrick's hand rebalances the equation, pulling what was once a generous pour into something more considered. The original wore its materials loosely, almost casual in how it laid everything out. The reconstruction tightens the seams. Where the first version let notes drift past one another, this one sets them into conversation.
What makes Jasmynal II worth a second look is the composition's refusal to settle into a single category. The cocoa and jasmine don't compete; they occupy different rooms in the same house, each one audible through the walls. The bean's almost-savory sweetness leans against the almost-greasiness of jasmine sambac without either winning outright. Then there's the base. Indonesian sandalwood, Cambodian oud, Kashmiri deer musk, castoreum. That's not a quiet finish.
The evolution
The opening finds its footing in fenugreek, that maple-adjacent, savory-edged note doing the work of a curtain raise. Bay leaf cuts underneath, adding a green astringency that keeps the sweetness honest. Black pepper doesn't show up bright; it shows up structural, pressing the spices into shape without ever calling attention to itself. The fenugreek fades slow. What replaces it is barley, a word that shouldn't work on skin but does, adding a warm graham-cracker hum underneath everything else. The barley holds longer than you'd expect, bridging the gap between the spicy opening and the floral heart with the patience of something that knows exactly what it's doing. The jasmine sambac arrives and it arrives with tobacco already in hand. No clean transition here, no polite handoff. The two enter together, the tobacco's dry leafiness giving the jasmine's indolic edge a grounded counterweight.
Cultural impact
Coming to Jasmynal II in 2025 means arriving after the work has already been done twice. The original JINX classic established a foundation. The reconstruction adds a new layer of intention on top of it. Emrick's revision doesn't simply update the formula; it asks the materials to do more, and the materials answer. The cocoa-plus-oud pairing does heavy lifting here. On paper, the combination might read as overly rich, the sort of gourmand-oud hybrid that collapses under its own weight. In practice, the cocoa's bittersweet darkness and the oud's resinous austerity keep each other in check. Neither overwhelms. Both ground.
