The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kambo Sumi Attar comes from perfumer Taha Syed, working alongside Muhammad Islamov and the Agar Aura collaboration, released in 2025 as part of Vivace's Signature Collection. The composition pulls its name and backbone from Cambodian oud, a material that gives the juice its resinous depth and the particular heat the wood carries on its own. Kambo Sumi sits firmly in the brand's oud-forward lane, where raw material provenance matters more than marketing gloss. Syed and Islamov built the composition around that Cambodian oud foundation, then layered smoke, cinnamon, and labdanum until the heat felt earned rather than applied.
What makes this composition worth your time is the way it refuses easy categories. The guaiacol adds a phenolic, almost smoked-meat edge that keeps things from going polite. The woodland strawberry note is the real curveball. It's not a fruity opening designed to charm you in; it reads closer to a darkened preserve, thick and reduced, which means it integrates with the cinnamon instead of fighting it. Cambodian oud brings resinous density while Papua oud adds a wilder undertone beneath it, and the two together create depth that a single oud source couldn't reach on its own.
The evolution
The opening is almost aggressive. Black pepper and cinnamon hit together, sharp and bright, with the strawberry pulsing underneath like something about to burn. There's a gourmand-adjacent sweetness early on, sweet-spicy, with the guaiacol adding a charred edge that keeps it from going soft. Then the smoke arrives. Not cigarette smoke, not fireplace smoke, more like the smell of resin hitting hot metal, incense and char braided together, and it overtakes the opening before long. The Cambodian oud surfaces next, resinous and dense, and the Papua oud adds a darker, almost leathery undertone beneath it. As the composition settles, the spice-fruit gives way fully to smoke-oud, and the labdanum has thickened everything into something that feels closer to amber than any individual note.
Cultural impact
Kambo Sumi Attar occupies a specific corner of the oud fragrance world: the corner where Cambodian oud meets modern extraction and the wearer's tolerance for smoke is high. The kind of person who treats their attar collection the way someone else treats their watch collection, with attention to origin, batch, and the way each one wears on their skin across seasons. It speaks to someone with prior fluency in the genre, who already understands what resinous depth means and what smoke can do when it's balanced against oud instead of drowning in it. The composition doesn't try to convert anyone.
