The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ood Morning V arrives in 2025 from Laurent Smal, a composition that asks what happens when jasmine meets serious oud. It positions Bulgarian rose between the bright white floral and the resinous depth, a study in contrast rather than harmony. Assam oud anchors everything at the base, pulling the composition toward something dense and unapologetic. The extrait format amplifies intensity without sacrificing the freshness people expect from the name. Smal's hand here is confident, architectural. This isn't a fragrance that whispers its intentions. The top notes crack open with white florals that demand attention, and the Bulgarian rose threads through the jasmine like a cool foil, sharpening what might otherwise read as purely sweet.
What sets this composition apart is the explicit layering of two different rose traditions: Bulgarian rose brings a cool, almost metallic lift, while the May rose (Rose de Mai) lends a warmer, jammy facet that rounds out the heart. The spice of coriander threads between the florals and the earthy, animalic base, its peppery coolness adding dimension to the transition. The animalic notes and leather aren't background texture. They show up, which signals the wearer's tolerance for compositions that don't sanitize themselves.
The evolution
The first hour is jasmine and rose in a louder conversation than most fragrances allow, with coriander threading between them like a skipped stone. There is sweetness, but it comes from the Bourbon vanilla and tonka bean at the base, not from any syrupy accord. The oud begins to surface properly as the florals settle, something more leathery, more animal, with a faint earthiness that grounds the composition. The Mediterranean nuts soften the edges throughout, preventing the drydown from becoming austere. By the time the projection has pulled closer to the skin, the composition is still readable. Jasmine hasn't vanished. It's been folded into something warmer, almost creamy from the tonka and vanilla undercurrent. The Assam oud settles into a quiet hum that stays legible through the late hours, a base that keeps speaking even when the wearer has stopped paying attention.
Cultural impact
Ood Morning V treats jasmine and oud as co-equal ingredients, neither one permitted to swallow the other. The animalic-leather base gives it rougher edges than most sweetened oud presentations, making it a composition that announces itself from the first spray. Its closest peers share that same unapologetic floral-oud register, compositions that refuse to fade politely or dilute their intentions for mass appeal. The wearer's experience is shaped by the explicit layering of Bulgarian rose and Rose de Mai, two rose traditions that meet in the heart and create a shifting dialogue as the hours pass.
