The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Francesca Bianchi has long been drawn to the meeting point of coastline and grove, where salt air mingles with the scent of orange blossoms in full bloom. Sex and the Sea Neroli emerged from that specific Mediterranean geography, released as an extrait concentration in 2019 to amplify the richness of its floral heart. Bianchi wanted to move beyond the typical aquatics genre by grounding sea salt in warm, animalic materials rather than synthetic freshness. The result is a fragrance that feels native to a specific landscape rather than invented in a laboratory.
Bianchi chose neroli as the emotional center because it carries both the brightness of citrus and the depth of floral richness, making it uniquely suited to a fragrance that bridges sea and land. The coconut note serves a structural purpose, softening the sharp edges of the citrus top while adding a tropical warmth that prevents the composition from feeling purely green. Ambergris and civet are not included for shock value but for their ability to simulate the organic, living quality of sea air combined with skin warmth.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with bergamot and petitgrain opening quickly, their citrus freshness cutting through before neroli claims the foreground with luminous intensity. As the composition warms on skin, coconut adds a creamy tropical note while honey and mimosa introduce a powdery sweetness that softens the sharper floral edges. Ambergris and civet arrive mid-development, adding the signature animalic warmth that separates this from gentler florals. Immortelle and rose bring complexity with their honey-bitter character, while benzoin and labdanum build the resinous warmth that carries into the drydown. The late stage settles into sandalwood, vanilla, and vetiver, where the coconut fades to a memory and the ambergris remains as a lingering marine anchor.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 debut, Sex and the Sea Neroli has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts for its bold animalic base. Wearers praise its hypnotic longevity and the way the coconut‑citrus opening flips into a sensual, civet‑kissed dry‑down. The fragrance often appears on lists of summer‑to‑autumn staples, celebrated for balancing fresh marine vibes with an unapologetically warm, Intimate finish.
