The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nº 4 Evasion Exotica arrived in 2018 as part of Victorio & Lucchino's Aguas Masculinas collection. The name says it all: evasion means escape, and exotica signals somewhere far from Seville. But this isn't a fragrance that abandons its roots. It's an exploration that starts from home, Provençal lavender as the departure point, Indonesian patchouli as the destination. The lavender opens with a cool, herbal clarity that feels immediate and familiar, while the Indonesian patchouli brings an earthy, slightly sweet depth that lingers in the background. Together they create a tension between the known and the unknown, the domestic and the distant, without ever fully resolving into either.
What makes this composition interesting is how it handles the lavender-spice tension. The nutmeg and cloves arrive while lavender still lingers, creating a middle ground that neither note list nor marketing copy fully prepares you for. The spices don't overwhelm the lavender but rather weave through it, adding warmth without erasing the herbaceous clarity. Akigalawood, a proprietary woody-amber material, fills the heart where a traditional oud might sit, giving depth without the polarizing animalic edge that some find off-putting.
The evolution
The opening is all atmosphere, lavender's cool herbal quality dominates, with black pepper providing subtle heat underneath. The pepper doesn't announce itself loudly but rather adds a gentle prickle that keeps the lavender from feeling static. Within twenty minutes, the spices assert themselves. Cloves bring a warm sweetness that counters the lavender's camphor edge, while nutmeg adds a slightly nutty, aromatic dimension. The heart introduces the exotic woods: Akigalawood's synthetic-amber warmth plays against Indonesian patchouli's earthy depth, while Texas cedar provides structure. The cedar doesn't dominate but serves as a skeleton that holds the richer materials in place. This middle phase lasts the longest, shifting between spice and wood as one or the other takes temporary precedence.
Cultural impact
Victorio & Lucchino occupies a particular niche within Spanish perfumery. The Aguas Masculinas collection positions each numbered scent as a chapter in a larger story. Nº 4 Evasion Exotica serves the buyer who appreciates a fragrance with a clear point of view, one that doesn't simply replicate what international houses are doing. The collection gives wearers a sense of continuity, with each numbered scent building on the one before it. The house has built its reputation on creating fragrances that feel rooted in a specific place and sensibility, offering an alternative to the more universal appeal of mainstream perfumery.
