The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wind 风 is one of several Uttori releases. The brand's catalog includes fragrances that reference concrete imagery: osmanthus gardens, bamboo paths, misty tea mountains. Wind takes its name from a natural element, joining other releases in the collection that draw from elemental themes. The 2019 launch placed it among Uttori's mid-period releases. During this time, the brand continued developing its range of compositions, exploring different directions beyond single-note floral fragrances.
What makes Wind structurally interesting is the relationship between its opening and its base. The top is aggressively herbal; basil and bay leaf aren't subtle materials, and galbanum adds that sharp, almost acrid green quality. But the heart introduces something different: mountain air and river notes. These aren't marine accords in the conventional sense. They're atmospheric materials, meant to evoke the feeling of open space and moving water rather than salt or seaweed.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly. Bergamot and basil arrive together, with galbanum and grass asserting themselves within the first five minutes; the green is immediate and unapologetic. Bay leaf lingers through the first hour, giving the top a savory edge that sets this apart from typical fresh fragrances. Around the 30-minute mark, the aquatic heart emerges. Mountain air and river notes soften the herbal sharpness without replacing it entirely. The transition isn't dramatic; it unfolds gradually, like moving from one type of terrain to another. Musks appear here, lending skin-similarity to the mid section. By the second hour, the base takes over. Cypress and vetiver lead the drydown, with cedarwood and oakmoss following. The overall effect is drier than expected, not austere, but definitely moving away from freshness toward something earthier and more grounded.
Cultural impact
Wind occupies a particular place in Uttori's catalog, distinct from the floral intimacy of the osmanthus releases and different from the contemplative stillness of the tea mountain series. This fragrance offers something more dynamic and directional in its structure. The composition attracts wearers who want green character without sweetness, and who appreciate that the herbal-spicy opening gives way to something drier and more grounded. The fragrance presents a green-to-woody arc that unfolds deliberately across its wear.
