The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dominique Preyssas built UDV for Men in 1993. The composition opens with a bright citrus accord that provides immediate clarity without cloying sweetness. Sage and artemisia form an herbal core that grounds the fragrance with aromatic depth, creating an interplay of bitter and green notes that feels intentional rather than accidental. The citrus top arrives before you do, maintaining presence throughout the wear without needing to reapply. Part of the UDV For Men collection, this fragrance occupies a space where herbal authenticity meets everyday wearability.
The sage-artemisia pairing defines the fragrance's character. Artemisia brings a slight bitterness, a medicinal edge that sage softens into something more wearable. Together they create a complex herbal foundation. The galbanum in the heart adds a green bite, creating a contrast with the mint that keeps the mid-section from becoming smooth and forgettable. This composition prioritizes complexity over comfort, appealing to those who appreciate nuanced scent development.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes belong to mint and citrus, a sharp, clean opening that announces itself and then steps back. Lemon and tangerine provide the brightness; the sage underneath prevents anything from becoming sweet. Around the thirty-minute mark the heart opens: galbanum and rosemary introduce a bitter-green note that shifts the energy from fresh to grounded. The rosemary is the tell, it lingers while everything else moves. By hour two, the base takes over. Vetiver and oakmoss create the fougère signature, that classic mossy-woody drydown that defined 90s masculinity. The patchouli adds depth without sweetness. The jasmine in the base is subtle, a whisper of warmth that stops the drydown from becoming austere. The oakmoss and vetiver hold longest, creating a signature that stays close but lingers past the citrus fade.
Cultural impact
UDV for Men occupies a particular corner of masculine fragrance culture, appealing to wearers who appreciate aromatic-woody compositions. It's not a statement fragrance; it's a quiet confidence that doesn't need to announce itself. The aromatic-woody structure places it among compositions that offer something beyond the immediately likeable.
