The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sacred Groove arrived in 2022 as a collaboration between THoO and paper poet Domitilla Biondi, who carves paper with a scalpel to create works that reach into other dimensions. The brief was deceptively simple: build a fragrance as welcoming as paper. What does that mean, olfactively? Paper is white, porous, precise. It holds weight without adding burden. It exists to be written on. The perfumer translated this through iris, the whitest note in perfumery, and lavender, which suspends the composition in air. Angelica's green-spice gives the material its irregularity, its organic edge. The base is warm woods: the surface you write on, the desk that holds everything together.
The note structure is unusual for a house built on oud. Where most THoO releases anchor deeply in resinous, animalic territory, Sacred Groove chooses powdery florals as its protagonist. Turkish rose and jasmine form a sweet, creamy heart. But they don't float untethered, labdanum's resinous depth keeps them honest, and the base of amber, vanilla, and tonka bean wraps everything in warmth. There's an unusual balance here: delicate enough to feel ephemeral, substantial enough to last well into the night. The spiced woods and myrrh in the drydown give it the kind of presence that lingers on fabric, reminding you the next morning that something was worn.
The evolution
The opening is all green precision. Bitter orange arrives citrus-bright, but the angelica root cuts through with something almost medicinal, the smell of a first cut into white paper, exact and immediate. Then the lavender arrives, and with it the florals begin to unfold. Jasmine, Turkish rose, a whisper of something powdery from the iris. The composition shifts from sharp to soft in a way that feels deliberate, like a room slowly filling with late-afternoon light. The drydown is where Sacred Groove earns its name. The florals recede slowly, leaving the lavender and iris to linger longest. Meanwhile, the base emerges: warm amber, vanilla, and tonka bean wrapping around musk and myrrh. The spiced woods arrive last, adding depth without weight. On fabric, a ghost of that powdery warmth stays until the next morning.
Cultural impact
Sacred Groove takes a quieter path. The 2022 release features powdery florals, warm amber, and a paper-inspired lightness that suggests unexpected creative possibilities. Its character diverges from more conventional fragrance profiles, offering a distinctive approach that invites discovery.
