The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Every perfumer has a moment they want to bottle, the breath before a decision, the pause before a confession. Maurizio Cerizza found his in 2018 with Just Before, a fragrance built around the idea of anticipation itself. Not the event. Not the aftermath. The space right before something changes. Named with deliberate simplicity, Just Before arrived as part of The House of Oud's Arts collection. Cerizza worked with saffron as the opening catalyst: a note that demands attention, that opens conversations before the wearer says a word. The saffron here doesn't announce itself gently. It arrives with a dry, almost dusty spice, setting an immediate tone that feels both intimate and charged.
The composition leans on Palo Santo for its smoky, slightly medicinal wood character, and on benzoin for a resinous sweetness that smooths everything below it. The ylang-ylang adds a tropical floral layer that keeps the heart from becoming too heavy, too dark. There is a careful balance at work here, a sense that every element is precisely calibrated to maintain a specific mood. The Palo Santo brings a quiet intensity, a woodiness that feels ancient and grounded without ever becoming aggressive. Benzoin wraps around it with a warmth that feels almost like an embrace, soft and reassuring.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Saffron arrives with a dry, almost dusty spice, not sweet, not soft. Bergamot cuts through it for the first fifteen minutes, keeping the whole thing bright and citrus-forward. Then the lemon fades and the heart takes over: Palo Santo's smoky character deepens the composition, myrrh adds a resinous weight, and the ylang-ylang blooms quietly in the background, floral and slightly sweet. This is the phase that makes you check your wrist twice. Two hours in, the drydown begins. Vanilla emerges first, creamy, warm, familiar in the best way, followed by sandalwood, which grounds everything without heaviness. Benzoin and amber arrive together, building a sweet, powdery base that settles close to the skin. The progression feels inevitable, each stage flowing naturally into the next, the early brightness giving way to something deeper and more contemplative.
Cultural impact
Just Before sits within The House of Oud's Arts collection. The fragrance features a saffron-vanilla axis that gives it a distinctive character within the niche perfume landscape. This particular combination creates something that feels both grounded and anticipatory, capturing a moment of transition or potential. The composition manages to be noticeable without being aggressive, present without being overwhelming. It occupies a specific space in the wearer's experience, something you notice yourself more than you expect others to notice you.
