The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Viking Ship arrived in 2025, composed by Mahsam Raza as part of The Dua Brand's Dua Designer Line. The composition wears its fougère DNA openly, drawing clear inspiration from the heritage of Drakkar Noir without hiding behind it. The vessel in question is unmistakable: the structure, the lavender-and-bergamot spine, the aromatic backbone that defined an entire masculine category decades ago. This isn't reinvention. It's interpretation with more muscle, more green bite, and a resinous base that refuses to behave like a heritage composition. The lavender here carries a sharper, more camphoraceous edge than what you'll find in older interpretations, and the bergamot trades some of its polite citrus sweetness for a slightly bitter, almost metallic brightness.
The note pyramid is dense with intention. Basil, bergamot, juniper, lavender, lemon, lemon verbena, mint, and rosemary each pull the opening toward a different direction of freshness, creating an aromatic complexity that shifts with every breath. The heart introduces wormwood and artemisia, two bitter herbs that anchor the fougère character before the warmth of cinnamon, coriander, and carnation soften the edges. What separates this from a textbook lavender scent is the base: oakmoss, leather, fir balsam, patchouli, vetiver, and resins layered with cedar, sandalwood, and amber.
The evolution
The opening is a wind tunnel. Bergamot and lemon hit bright and sharp, then lavender and rosemary sweep in with cold herbal intensity. Juniper adds a crisp, almost crystalline clarity, basil gives a green metallic edge, and mint cuts through everything like cold air. The first stretch of wear is all cold breeze and sharpened edges, with the herbal and citrus notes competing for dominance. The warmth rises gradually as the composition settles. Wormwood and artemisia bring a bitter, almost medicinal quality that shifts the mood entirely. Cinnamon and coriander follow, adding spice without sweetness, their warmth building slowly beneath the herbal sharpness. Jasmine hides in here somewhere, adding a creamy whisper that softens the edges just enough. Carnation brings a clove-like depth that rounds out the herbal sharpness, creating a bridge between the bright opening and what's coming.
Cultural impact
Black Viking Ship enters a fragrance category long shaped by Drakkar Noir, the Guy Laroche composition that established the lavender-bergamot-rosemary fougère template for generations of wearers. The Dua Brand's 2025 release draws on that heritage while pushing the aromatic profile into sharper, greener territory. By leaning on juniper, wormwood, and artemisia in the heart, the composition introduces bitter herbal accents that shift the familiar fougère blueprint toward something colder and more intense. The result is a take on the lavender-bergamot template that retains its masculine DNA while amplifying the green and bitter elements.
