The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nigritella takes its name from a wild orchid native to the Alpine meadows, a flower that blooms at altitude where the air thins and the sun hits harder. The Body Shop's 2016 Elixirs of Nature collection drew inspiration from the world's most extreme growing environments, places where nature concentrates its effort into scent to survive. Plants that thrive in challenging conditions often develop concentrated, distinctive fragrances as a survival mechanism. The perfumers used Headspace technology to capture that, extracting the aromatic signature without harvesting a single bloom. The resulting scent carries a particular depth, as if the very essence of those high-altitude blossoms has been distilled into liquid form.
In perfumery, the ingredient that captures the essence of this wild orchid most faithfully is the vanilla orchid, not standard vanilla, but the darker, more resinous variety that carries something almost animalic beneath its sweetness. The fragrance opens with bright citrus that keeps the initial impression light and airy, preventing any heaviness from settling in too quickly. As the scent develops, the heat builds gradually, revealing its true character. Paired with tuberose and jasmine, it creates a floral heart that reads as both lush and grounded.
The evolution
The bergamot opens bright, its citrus presence lingering before the florals take their turn. Then the white blooms arrive: tuberose first, jasmine close behind, the vanilla orchid threading through both like a warm current. The citrus retreats but doesn't disappear. It stays in the periphery, keeping the sweetness honest. By the second hour, the sandalwood arrives, soft, barely there, holding everything together. The vanilla persists longest, settling close to the skin, warming without projecting. On fabric, it can be detected the next morning. The composition reveals itself in layers, each note taking its turn while the previous ones fade gracefully into the background, creating a lingering presence that remains close to the wearer throughout its development.
Cultural impact
The Elixirs of Nature collection brought a distinctive perspective to the natural-fragrance landscape, emphasizing ethical sourcing and accessibility. Nigritella fits naturally into this philosophy with its botanical inspiration and balanced composition. The scent offers complexity without excessive projection, appealing to those who prefer subtlety over statement. Its moderate sillage makes it suitable for everyday wear while still delivering intricate olfactory interest.
