The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alphée takes its name from Alphée Dubois, a figure woven into the Spoturno lineage. The fragrance distills a memory of a cruise along the rocky coasts of Corsica toward a small archipelago, where the coastal landscape meets the sea. Christopher Sheldrake composed Alphée with this voyage in mind: the salt-sharp air, the scrubby coastal vegetation, the way light behaves differently over water than over land. The composition captures the mineral clarity of that coastal memory, layering salt and stone with a subtle warmth that lingers like the last light of day. Each element works together, creating an olfactory landscape that feels both immediate and intimate, inviting the wearer to explore its nuanced character rather than presenting a literal snapshot of the voyage.
What sets Alphée apart is the interplay between its mineral base and solar heart. The myrtle and juniper berries frame the citrus, giving it a structure that extends well beyond the first spray. Pink pepper and coriander add a clean spiciness that enriches the composition. Then the white florals arrive: neroli brings orange blossom coolness, jasmine adds warmth. The ambroxan in the base provides a mineral-salt finish that makes the drydown feel like warm stone rather than skin.
The evolution
The opening hits with citrus brightness, bergamot, bitter orange, mandarin, the kind of clarity that reads as salt air over warm rock. Pink pepper adds a clean spark. The myrtle and juniper appear, herbal and aromatic, grounding the citrus before it can float away. The white florals take over: neroli and jasmine soften the citrus, creating a solar warmth that feels like the sun at its peak. Coriander and nutmeg weave through, adding texture. The drydown belongs to vetiver and musk, with ambroxan providing that mineral-salt finish. The sillage stays moderate, the kind of presence that someone standing next to you will notice before you announce yourself. The longevity extends across the day, close and persistent.
Cultural impact
Alphée offers a fresh take on mineral-fresh fragrance conventions. Rather than falling into familiar aquatic territory, the composition grounds its citrus in myrtle and juniper, adding white florals and warm spices that give the composition lasting depth. From a small independent house, this release appeals to collectors who understand that modern mastery builds on foundations they didn't lay, creating fluent interpretations rather than reverent pastiche. The fragrance invites discovery, rewarding attention with subtle layers that reveal themselves over time.
