The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Spiritica built its identity on the idea that fragrance is narrative, and Luca Maffei approaches Yuzuyakuza as a perfumer working in that tradition. The composition draws from the Irezumi ritual, where tattooing marks a permanent commitment to identity. Maffei translates this into scent by layering brightness and permanence: the citrus opening is the visible mark, immediate and clean, while the ink, asphalt, and suede beneath it form the scar tissue that belongs only to the wearer.
The note structure reflects a specific philosophy about contrast. Citrus in perfumery often functions as a top note that evaporates and leaves nothing behind. Here, Sudachi and yuzu are the opening act, but the gunpowder and asphalt that follow are designed to alter how the citrus is remembered, not replace it. Similarly, the cherry blossom in the heart is not ornamental; it exists to complicate the ink and asphalt around it, adding a fragility that makes the surrounding notes feel more deliberate. The suede in the drydown is the final statement: softness earned through roughness, a material that has been broken in rather than polished.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a sharp citrus declaration: Sudachi and yuzu, bold and unapologetic. Gunpowder appears almost immediately, not as a novelty but as a correction, a reminder that brightness has a cost. Grapefruit and pineapple support the opening but never dominate it. As the composition moves into the heart, the atmosphere shifts entirely. Ink and asphalt create a tactile darkness, petrichor introduces a damp, lived-in quality, and cherry blossom threads through like a single light source in a room that is otherwise heavy with shadow. The solar note prevents the heart from becoming oppressive, keeping warmth present even as the texture thickens. The drydown takes the wearer from urban grit to something more personal: bank note and incense create a smoky-paper atmosphere, mahogany and cedarwood provide structure, and suede finishes the composition like a worn leather jacket that has absorbed years of context.
Cultural impact
Yuzuyakuza occupies an interesting position in contemporary perfumery. The yuzu opening can strike some as the most refreshing citrus they have encountered, while others find it unexpectedly bright. Gunpowder smoke offers a smoky character that some read as rich and authentic, others as having a sharper edge. The fragrance does not apologize for its contradictions. It builds something that challenges expectations while remaining wearable. This is a scent for someone who wants their fragrance to provoke thought, to start conversation, to be remembered.
