Fireside Intense arrived in 2007 from Laurie Erickson's Sonoma studio. Where the original Fireside pulled back, this composition leans in, built around denser smoke, heavier wood, and a more aggressive animalic presence. The brand's official description reads: 'the strangely satisfying scent of smoldering woods, carried by the crackling falling air or emitted from an evening campfire.' That's the source material. The execution suggests someone who has stood close enough to feel the heat on their face, who understands that campfire smoke has weight and texture and a way of working into clothing and hair and skin. Fireside Intense takes that single image and renders it with uncommon conviction, translating woodsmoke into something that feels inhabited rather than observed.
What separates Fireside Intense from the crowded category of smoky wood fragrances is the leather-castoreum axis running beneath everything else. Erickson threads actual castoreum through the structure, which gives the smoke an animalic undertone that reads more like worn leather than a candle. The oud grounds the composition further, adding density and a slightly resinous shadow that keeps the smoke from floating off into pure atmosphere. Texas cedar and Himalayan cedar form the woody foundation, their dry, pencil-shaving character providing contrast to the heavier smoke notes.

Around the two-hour mark, the oud surfaces more clearly, and the composition shifts from pure smoke into something drier and woodier. The guaiac and sandalwood take over, carrying most of the middle phase while the leather-castoreum pairing holds the base steady. The wood notes never lose their smoky undertone but they gain a creamy, almost resinous dimension. As hours pass, the sharper smoke notes recede gradually, leaving behind the softer, sweeter wood tones.
