The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
NOT Perfumes launched in 2018 with Johanna Venables at the helm. The fragrance carries a name that resists easy explanation, something borrowed from outside conventional perfumery vocabulary. Nadir opens with camphor, a material that arrives sharp and cold, immediately alerting the senses before any warmth has a chance to settle. The camphor presence is striking, medicinal, almost clinical in its precision. Cardamom follows briefly, a fleeting whisper of spice that does little to soften what came before. What unfolds on skin is dense, slightly astringent, entirely uncompromising in its character. This is a fragrance that makes no gestures toward immediate likability, instead offering something that demands attention through sheer presence alone. The opening does not invite, it declares.
The note structure refuses comfort at every turn. Camphor and cardamom at the top create a sharp, cold tension, the kind that clears the airways and sharpens awareness. There is nothing gentle here, no gradual easing into sweetness or familiar accords. The camphor dominates the opening minutes with its mentholated chill while the cardamom flickers in and out, barely visible. The heart settles into leather, patchouli, and myrrh, materials that build density without offering respite.
The evolution
The opening hits in seconds. Camphor and cardamom arrive together, sharp, cold, medicinal. There is no softening here, no gradual build. The camphor is immediate, almost astringent, like ice on skin, striking the nostrils with mentholated intensity. Cardamom flickers for a few minutes, providing the briefest warmth before leather takes over and announces the heart. The heart is where this lives longest. Leather dominates the mid-section, with patchouli, myrrh, and birch tar building into a dense, smoky, earthy wall that refuses to thin or diminish. This phase holds its ground without wavering, the leather note providing structure while the patchouli and myrrh add layer upon layer of depth. The accord feels weighty, substantial, occupying space rather than dissolving into it.
Cultural impact
NOT Perfumes is a Swedish brand that entered the niche fragrance conversation in 2018. The camphor-forward character of Nadir centers an ingredient more commonly associated with medicinal preparations than luxury scent. By placing this material at the forefront rather than using it as a subtle background element, the fragrance offers something that diverges from more conventional niche fare. The approach is unusual in a market where certain accord types have become familiar reference points. Camphor carries associations with cooling, with clarity, with the sharp precision of certain medicinal preparations.
