The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shyamala Maisondieu wanted to capture the romance of a rendez-vous at Place Vendôme, Paris's most luxurious square, home to the finest jewelry houses and watched over by its iconic column. The name is a promise: Un Baiser, a kiss. Maisondieu translated that specific Parisian moment into a fragrance that moves from the cool mineral air of the opening to the warm skin-close intimacy of the drydown. The composition begins with crisp, airy qualities that evoke the crispness of a morning in the square, then gradually settles into something softer and more personal. There's a transition that feels like stepping from the grand public space into a private moment, the mineral freshness giving way to deeper, warmer notes that cling gently to the skin.
What makes Un Baiser work is the way its materials talk to each other without competing. The ambrette seed opens with a mineral, skin-like quality, like cold air on warm skin. Angelica seed adds a quiet herbaceous undertone that keeps things grounded. The heart features hawthorn and amyris, creating a floral and slightly woody character that feels elegant and refined. Australian sandalwood, present in the base, adds creamy warmth that supports the overall composition. The frankincense in the base doesn't burn, it breathes. Tonka bean wraps everything in warmth.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a cool mineral quality, the ambrette seed providing lift before the angelica settles in. The angelica brings a quiet, herbaceous presence that grounds the opening. As the scent develops, the hawthorn and amyris emerge, creating a powdery elegance that feels soft and refined. The texture is like velvet, the feeling of afternoon light in an intimate setting. The sandalwood doesn't compete with the floral heart. It holds it, adding creamy depth that supports the lighter notes. The base reveals frankincense and tonka bean, a warm resinous embrace that stays close to the skin. The overall trajectory moves from crisp opening to soft heart to warm, lasting base, creating a complete narrative that feels intimate and romantic throughout its wear.
Cultural impact
Place Vendôme has long symbolized Parisian luxury, a square where glittering jewellers' windows display treasures behind the refined facades. The launch of Un Baiser Place Vendôme arrives as a statement in this storied setting. This composition offers a different kind of presence, one that emphasizes personal connection over broadcast. The fragrance invites the wearer into a world of quiet sophistication, where the experience matters more than announcement. Place Vendôme's reputation as a haven for discretion provides the perfect backdrop for a scent that rewards close attention.
