The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nefee draws its name from Nefertiti, whose name translates to "the beautiful woman has arrived." The ancient Egyptian queen has endured as a symbol of beauty, power, and unmistakable presence, and Scent of Africa built this 2022 composition to channel exactly that energy. The house comes from Ghana and launched Nefee as part of a reinvention that same year, with the fragrance positioned inside the Eternal Legends Collection and dedicated to Nefertiti and great women of African history. Perfumer Delphine Lebeau-Krowiak constructed the composition around three white-flower powerhouses: Egyptian jasmine, Madagascan ylang-ylang, and tuberose. These aren't supporting players.
What makes Nefee structurally interesting is the contrast at work. Red fruits and pink pepper open sharp, almost effervescent, setting up a brightness that the white-flower heart then completely overwrites. That pivot from sparkling fruit to dense, creamy floral is the composition's defining move. The base layer reinforces it with a mahogany-vanilla-patchouli trio that adds weight without darkening the character. Frankincense and tonka bean, listed among the base notes in some breakdowns, contribute a resinous sweetness that carries the warmth of the woods forward into the final hours.
The evolution
The opening belongs to red fruits, bergamot, and pink pepper, sparkling and bright, the kind of launch that reads as light. Then the florals arrive, and light is no longer the word. Tuberose dominates, narcotic and creamy in the way the perfumer herself described, supported by Egyptian jasmine and ylang-ylang contributing their own sweetness to the accord. This heart phase runs long, and it's the most prominent stretch of the fragrance. As the white flowers recede, cedar and mahogany take over the architecture while vanilla, tonka bean, and a thread of patchouli fill in the warmth. The drydown is warmer, sweeter, and more grounded. Frankincense adds a faint resinous hum underneath, the kind of low, smoky sweetness that only makes itself known once you've worn the fragrance for hours.
Cultural impact
Nefee sits within Scent of Africa's Eternal Legends Collection, a line that reinterprets iconic women of African history through contemporary perfumery. Naming the fragrance after Nefertiti, "the beautiful woman has arrived," positions it within a broader conversation about African queens and their rightful visibility in cultural memory. The house comes from Ghana and uses compositions like Nefee to work with raw materials that carry geographical significance, including Egyptian jasmine, Madagascan ylang-ylang, and mahogany.
