The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bellua emerged in 2023 from Scent Of Africa as a fragrance interpretation of Bele Alua, the tree-guardian deity woven into Ghanaian mythological tradition. Perfumers Delphine Lebeau-Krowiakj and Nelly Hachem-Ruiz approached the brief by investigating Ghana's lush forests, studying the interplay of shadows, light, and abundant tropical flora that define those landscapes. Rather than creating a literal botanical portrait, they distilled the emotional impression of that space into scent, translating myth into olfactory experience.
The note philosophy behind Bellua treats each ingredient as a character in a narrative rather than a simple aromatic element. Passion Fruit opens because tropical fruit abundance defines Ghana's natural wealth. Magnolia and Ylang-Ylang anchor the heart because white florals carry cultural significance across West Africa, appearing in ceremony and daily life. The inclusion of Ginger reflects the spice trade history intertwined with the region. White Cedar completes the story as a direct nod to the tree-guardian mythology at the fragrance's core. Each pairingrationale emerges from this mythology, asking how each note contributes to the forest narrative rather than treating them as isolated scent goals.
The evolution
The fragrance begins its journey with a tropical fruit explosion that evokes the vibrancy of Ghana's landscape. Passion Fruit and Green Apple arrive simultaneously, their bright sweetness balanced by the clean citrus of Bergamot and the subtle golden-green hint of Marigold. This opening recreates the sensory assault of stepping into a humid forest filled with ripening tropical fruit. The heart represents the forest's depths, where Magnolia's opulent creamy white flowers dominate over the spicier accents of Ginger and the sweeter tropical notes of Frangipani and Ylang-Ylang, with Jasmine threading through to maintain continuity. The drydown settles into the quiet stillness of the forest floor at dusk, where Amber emits warmth, Musk provides intimacy, and White Cedar stretches toward the canopy as the final guardian.
Cultural impact
Bellua taps into Ghanaian mythic symbolism, honoring the tree‑guardian deity Bele Alua. By weaving native botanicals like mari gold and African ginger with universally appealing fruit notes, the fragrance bridges local heritage and global perfume trends. Its launch in 2023 sparked conversations about sustainable sourcing of West African ingredients, encouraging other houses to explore regional flora. The scent’s narrative of forest guardianship resonated on social media, inspiring artists to create visual tributes that highlight Ghana’s biodiversity and cultural storytelling, thereby reinforcing a sense of pride and modern identity within the community.
