The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
H Aoud was created as part of the Harrods The Exclusive Aoud Collection, Roja Dove's tribute to the retailer that has defined London luxury for generations. The fragrance was built for a specific customer: the person who walks into Harrods and expects the world to adjust accordingly. The composition draws on an extensive palette of materials, including rose and oud, selected for their exceptional quality and combined in a way that could only result in a fragrance worthy of the Harrods name. From the first spritz, the scent announces itself with a confident presence that speaks to its exclusive origins and the careful thought that went into every aspect of its creation.
What makes H Aoud distinctive is the unusual trio anchoring its opening: cypriol oil, gurjan balsam, and valerian. Cypriol (also called nagarmotha) is an earthy, almost tar-like material rarely seen in Western perfumery. Valerian adds a medicinal, slightly animalic edge that most perfumers avoid entirely. Together with gurjan balsam's balsamic depth, they create an introduction that refuses to be polite. It's not about making you feel comfortable, it's about making you feel like you've entered a different tier of fragrance entirely. The rose and jasmine that follow don't soften this foundation so much as they decorate it, adding luxury without diluting the intensity.
The evolution
The opening hits hard and immediate, cypriol's earthy sharpness cutting through with valerian's strange undertone. Bergamot tries to lighten the load, but there's no escaping the density beneath. Then the heart arrives: rose and jasmine bloom against a backdrop of geranium's green bite, nutmeg's spice, and oregano's unexpected herbal savoriness. The transition isn't gentle, the savory edge carrying through, making the florals taste almost edible. As the fragrance develops, patchouli and vetiver take full command, their woody earthiness enveloping everything that came before. The oud surfaces gradually, resinous and warm, as labdanum and benzoin add depth and complexity. Birch appears in the far drydown, adding a subtle smoky, leathery facet that distinguishes this from softer oud compositions. On skin, the fragrance lingers with notable presence.
Cultural impact
As part of Harrods' exclusive aoud collection, H Aoud occupies a distinctive position in the world of luxury fragrance. The fragrance speaks to a client who understands that true luxury involves familiarity with unusual materials and comfort with intensity. In a market where many orientals aim for broad appeal, this one stands apart, offering something that won't fade into the background. It asks something of the wearer, inviting those who appreciate rare and uncompromising compositions to discover what sets it apart. H Aoud represents a commitment to craft over convention, a fragrance that rewards attention and invites exploration.
