The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gabriiela Chelariu designed Romance Intense not to reinvent the Romance woman, but to give her more. The original Romance made its statement about intimacy, tender and luminous. Twenty-five years later, this flanker considers how that woman might want depth without excess, warmth without weight. Chelariu reached for cedarwood and sandalwood to anchor the familiar rose, layered in vanilla for presence, and let the blackcurrant and green mandarin open bright. The Romance woman has evolved. Her fragrance has evolved with her.
The note composition builds rather than transforms. Top notes of blackcurrant, green mandarin, and bergamot arrive together, a citrus-fruity brightness that doesn't shout, just arrives. The heart is where Chelariu makes her case: rose provides the Romance inheritance, but pot marigold adds a fuller, warmer quality that elevates the expected floral into something more substantial. Ylang-ylang provides an undertone of creamy depth, while violet leaf absolute keeps the whole structure from becoming overly sweet.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and tart, blackcurrant and citrus together, that fresh-floral clarity the brand is known for. The green mandarin lingers alongside, and as it fades the violet leaf and rose-marigold heart emerge. The shift isn't dramatic, more like the difference between morning light and afternoon light. Same sun, softer angle. The drydown settles into sandalwood and cedar, the vanilla wrapping the floral heart in warmth, patchouli grounding everything without pushing forward. The fragrance wears close, stays present, and leaves a trace that's warm and woody-floral, not a statement, just a memory of someone who walked through the room and didn't need the room to know.
Cultural impact
Romance Intense occupies a specific position within the Ralph Lauren fragrance portfolio. This flanker continues a tradition of woody florals, offering something with more depth for those who appreciated the original. The composition positions itself alongside the house's established range, maintaining the refined character that defines the brand's olfactory identity. It's a fragrance that speaks to someone who values consistency and quality over novelty.
