The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black XS L'Aphrodisiaque arrived in 2013 as a limited-edition flanker to the original Black XS, extending the line into more intimate territory. The name itself, Aphrodisiaque, signals intent. This isn't a fragrance for blending in. Olivier Cresp built it around a tension: warm, edible sweetness against dark, almost raw materials. Honey and praline on one side. Cypriol and leather on the other. The collision between the edible and the animalic creates something bold and unapologetic. As the top notes fade, the honey emerges with a thick, golden presence that feels almost tangible, coating the senses with its richness. The praline follows, bringing an edible nuttiness that softens the overall impression without becoming saccharine.
What makes the heart of this composition interesting is how Cypriol and Honey work against each other. Cypriol brings a dark, smoky quality that typically reads as raw or confrontational. Honey, by contrast, is thick and golden and sweet. Orange blossom sits between them, a clean white floral that prevents the honey from becoming cloying and gives the cypriol something to soften against. The result isn't a smooth, unified heart. It's a negotiation. And that tension is what gives the fragrance its character.
The evolution
The opening hits hard. Cinnamon and saffron arrive together, bright, warm, almost sharp enough to catch in the throat. The lemon adds a brief citrus lift before retreating. The honey announces itself, the composition shifting as the praline follows, bringing an edible nuttiness that softens the spice without replacing it. The drydown is where Black XS L'Aphrodisiaque earns its name. Cypriol surfaces slowly, its dark smoky quality emerging from beneath the sweetness like something surfacing from deeper water. Leather settles last, grounding everything. White musk keeps it close to the skin rather than projecting outward. The fragrance settles into a warm, intimate phase that lingers close to the body, wrapping the wearer in a subtle embrace of sweetness and leather.
Cultural impact
Black XS L'Aphrodisiaque leans into warmth and sensuality with an unapologetic directness. The honey-leather combination and the presence of cypriol give it a darker character than many fragrances in its class. It's a fragrance that makes its intentions clear from the first spray, refusing to hide behind subtlety or polite restraint. The combination of edible sweetness and animalic darkness creates something that stands apart from the usual fare, a scent that invites conversation and rewards those who appreciate its particular brand of boldness.
