The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Phebo, founded in 1930 in Belem, Brazil, has spent decades distilling the botanical wealth of the Amazon into luxury fragrances built on French classical structure. In 2018, perfumer Carmita Magalhaes sought to bottle the crisp, contemplative spirit of matcha tea, an ingredient whose vegetal clarity resonated with the brand's rainforest heritage. Rather than a literal tea accord, Magalhaes chose to anchor the composition around green tea as a mood, then surrounded it with bright citrus and warm woods to give it shape and lift.
The pairing of green tea with bright citrus reflects Phebo's broader philosophy of balancing Amazonian botanicals with familiar Western structures. Green tea, with its cultural roots in East Asia, becomes a bridge between worlds, its vegetal clarity enhanced by the tropical brightness of pear and citrus. The warm drydown of musk, amber and cedarwood then grounds this freshness, ensuring the fragrance feels grounded rather than fleeting. It is a study in contrast: brightness against calm, crisp against warm, ephemeral against lingering.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with an immediate burst of pear and mandarin orange, softened by bergamot, creating a sparkling, optimistic opening that signals freshness without aggression. As the citrus fades, green tea steps forward as the heart, its slightly astringent quality lending a clean, contemplative character, while green notes and a whisper of lily keep the transition smooth and botanical. The drydown introduces musk and amber, which warm and soften the composition, before cedarwood arrives to add dry, woody depth, leaving a quiet, composed trail that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Matcha, a finely ground powder of specially grown green tea leaves, has been a cultural cornerstone in Japan for centuries, symbolizing mindfulness, ceremony, and refined taste. Its ritualistic preparation in tea ceremonies reflects a deep respect for nature and precision, influencing modern fragrance creators to capture that serene focus. By integrating matcha’s earthy, slightly bitter nuance with bright citrus notes, this scent pays homage to the balance of tradition and contemporary energy. The inclusion of pear and bergamot nods to the seasonal freshness celebrated in Japanese gardens, while the amber and cedar base echo the warm wooden interiors of tea houses.
