The beginning
The island of Nosy Be sits just off Madagascar, and the ylang-ylang that grows there has long been considered exceptional, richer, more intense than varieties from other regions. Perris Monte Carlo found it, recognized what they had, and made it the entire point of this fragrance. Jacques Flori, the house perfumer, worked with ylang-ylang extra essential oil and jasmine absolute as the structural backbone, letting the Nosy Be origin speak without competition. Launched in 2015, Ylang Ylang Nosy Be Extrait arrived as a statement about ingredient purity, not a composition designed to impress, but a single ingredient given the space and concentration to say everything it knows how to say.
The ylang-ylang from Nosy Be carries a profile distinct from other origins, more intensely waxy, with a creaminess that borders on almost too much of itself. Perris Monte Carlo didn't try to temper it. The extract concentration means the ylang-ylang arrives at full intensity, supported by jasmine sambac and rose rather than diluted by top notes that would push it into the background. This is the house philosophy applied directly: showcase the ingredient, don't complicate it. The jasmine absolute brings its own richness, adding body without competing for attention. Rose introduces a gentle sweetness that tempers the tropical intensity.
The evolution
The opening hits with cardamom's spice and mint's coolness first, a quick, bright entrance before the florals arrive. Lemon adds a clean brightness that keeps the first minutes from feeling heavy. Then the ylang-ylang arrives, and it arrives completely. No easing in. The jasmine sambac layers underneath, amplifying the tropical richness rather than softening it. Rose adds a delicate sweetness that threads through without redirecting the composition. This heart holds for a few hours, dense and floral and unapologetic. The drydown arrives slowly, amber and vanilla extend the warmth, musk keeps the florals present close to the skin, woody notes provide structure without adding weight.
