The Story
Why it exists.
Jacques Flori built Ylang Ylang Nosy Be around a single variety of ylang-ylang from the island of Nosy Be, located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar. The name identifies the terroir, the specific soil conditions and humidity that give this particular ylang-ylang its characteristic richness and creamy depth. Rather than treating the note as an accent element, Flori incorporated it throughout the fragrance structure, allowing it to function as a continuous presence rather than a momentary flourish. Complementary white flowers, jasmine sambac and orange blossom, amplify the tropical character without competing for attention. A warm vanilla and cedar base anchors the composition and keeps the florals from becoming ephemeral.

The Beginning
What makes this composition interesting is the vertical presence of ylang-ylang across the entire fragrance rather than just the opening. Most fragrances use ylang-ylang as a top-note burst that softens and fades. Here, it remains the connecting thread, evolving from bright and citrus-kissed at the opening to deeper and more complex in the heart, then settling into the warm, slightly animalic drydown where the vanilla and labdanum amplify its sensuous quality.
The Evolution
The opening arrives intense. Ylang-ylang, uncut, tropical and sweet with a slight medicinal edge that makes some noses wrinkle before softening. Grapefruit and lemon arrive quickly to brighten and smooth. Cardamom adds warmth that keeps the citrus from feeling too clean. By the second hour, jasmine sambac and orange blossom take over, shifting the character from bright to dreamy. The tropical warmth intensifies, humid and alive. Five or six hours in, the vanilla in the base begins to emerge. Warm, slightly resinous, with labdanum adding a sticky amber quality. Cedarwood and vetiver ground everything, woody, dry, slightly earthy. The ylang-ylang doesn't disappear; it deepens, acquiring a subtle animalic warmth that reads as skin-warm rather than synthetic. Ten hours later on most skin types, a quiet vanilla-and-cedar impression lingers close to the skin. The next morning, a faint trace remains.

The tropical warmth and creamy white florals of Ylang Ylang Nosy Be evoke a late afternoon by water, sun still warm, light beginning to deepen. The vanilla drydown adds a quiet intimacy that suits slow, warm-registers sound. Think smooth jazz, West African guitar, bossa nova, a texture that breathes rather than fills.
